The play is set during British women's struggle for the vote in the early 20th century, beginning with a suffragette committing suicide at the Derby and ending with the outbreak of World War I.

The story is centred around a love-affair between two fictional suffragettes whos crime lead to their imprisonment in Holloway prison. Ceclia is a married upper-class prisoner and Eve is working class and both have very different experiences. 

Eve's story even explores the dreaded force feeding, which in previous performances elsewhere made members of the audience leave.
